Anthony Bruce Henwood

It is with great sadness that we must share the passing of Tony, Dad, Grandad. He passed away in the quiet surroundings of his own home, in the peace of the evening on Thursday 17th February 2022 at the proud age of 90 years, only a few weeks short of his 91st birthday.

Tony, Dad or Grandad to most local people is at the heart of our family tradition. Starting out as a carpenter and manager within his own father’s building firm followed service with the Royal air Force, Tony soon found his place as the business found itself moving towards funerals. His career as a Funeral Director was hugely successful and his knowledge is truly vast. His tireless work as a representative for the profession both nationally and internationally and as a pioneer in the education of Funeral Directors has lead him to many a far flung corner of the world, in turn awarding him with great respect across the generations. He stood as President of the National Association of Funeral Directors from 1980 to 1981.

As a family we are incredibly grateful to all those who have cared for both Grandad, Tony, and supported Gran, Ruth, in her devotion and dedication which she has borne so bravely in recent times.

Both dad and I would like to thank our fellow professionals who we have worked beside for many years and who have supported our own family on this occasion, our special thanks must go to Dr Justin Randell and all the staff at Narrowcliff Surgery and also the District and Community Nursing Teams.

I would like to thank everyone I have met, supported and worked alongside locally in who have asked, ‘how grandad is getting on?’, shared stories, which we will treasure and sent their kindest regards, which I have shared. I am sure dad echoes that sentiment and we shall hold dear the knowledge that he is and was so well known and thought of within the community we continue to support.

A truly honoured and appreciated Cornish gentleman of which we are so proud.
